Bio: Dr. Suter was the first osteopathic emergency physician to serve as ACEP president, as well as the first person who worked full-time as an emergency medical technician (EMT) and paramedic. He began working as a full-time EMT in 1979 and continued to do so until he graduated from medical school. In 1993, he completed his residency in emergency medicine at the Joint Military Medical Centers in San Antonio, Texas.
Today, Dr. Suter is emergency department medical director at Spring Branch Medical Center in Houston, Texas; medical director for AMR-Dallas; and a partner in Greater Houston Emergency Physicians. He holds appointments as an associate professor of emergency medicine at University of Texas-Southwestern, Medical College of Georgia, and Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences.

Elected to ACEP's Board of Directors in 1999 and re-elected to the board in 2002, Dr. Suter has served on the organization's Council Steering Committee, Finance Committee, and Council. He also has performed as the Board's Secretary-Treasurer and participated in the Government Services Chapter as a board member. Additionally, he has been a consultant to Annals of Emergency Medicine, and was named a "Top Consultant" in 2000.

Dr. Suter co-chaired the 1993 National Highway Traffic Safety Administration task force that produced "Emergency Medical Service (EMS) Agenda for the Future," a comprehensive outline of basic strategies for ensuring the future viability and community value of EMS systems. This document still serves as the nation's overall strategic plan for EMS.
